Thinking about moving your shed, cabin, or other portable structure? Whether you’re relocating to a new property or simply repositioning a building on your land, it’s important to understand what goes into transporting these structures safely.
At Outback Transport LLC, we specialize in shed and cabin moves across North Idaho, Spokane, and surrounding areas. But not every building is ready to hit the road—and several key factors determine whether a move is doable, safe, and cost-effective.
Let’s take a closer look at what we consider before giving your building the green light.
Size Matters: Know Your Dimensions
The size of your shed or cabin plays a major role in how (or if) it can be transported. Extra-wide or tall buildings may require special permits or routing to avoid power lines, overpasses, or narrow roads. Anything over 14 feet wide or roughly 14’6” high (once loaded) can become a logistical challenge.
Our team evaluates the width, height, and length of your building to determine what kind of equipment and planning will be required.
Weight & Structure: Is Your Building Built to Travel?
Even if your shed or cabin looks solid, it still needs to withstand the pressure of lifting and the vibrations of travel. Buildings that are too heavy—or too fragile—can break down in transit if they aren’t structurally sound.
We look at:
- Floor and frame strength
- Signs of rot or water damage
- Roofing materials
- Overall age and build quality
If your building needs reinforcement before a move, we’ll let you know.
Site Access: Can We Reach It?
We can only move what we can safely access. Tight driveways, steep grades, soft ground, or narrow gates can make it difficult (or impossible) for our truck and equipment to reach your building.
Our transport team will evaluate:
- The clearance around your structure
- Obstacles like fences, trees, or landscaping
- Entry and exit paths for loading/unloading
Need help assessing access? We’re happy to offer guidance or perform a site check before the move.
Foundation Type: What’s Holding It Down?
The type of foundation under your building is a big factor in determining how easy (or difficult) it is to move.
Here’s what we usually encounter:
- Skid-mounted sheds or cabins – These are the simplest to transport.
- Concrete pads or footings – These often require disconnecting bolts or brackets.
- Pier foundations or anchors – These may need to be unfastened or removed prior to lifting.
No matter the setup, we’ll talk you through what needs to be done before moving day.
Permits, Pilot Cars & Red Tape
Moving any structure on public roads isn’t as simple as loading it up and heading out. Depending on the size of your building and the route it’s taking, we may need permits from state or local agencies, along with safety measures like pilot car escorts.
The good news? Outback Transport handles all the permitting and planning for you. We coordinate with local authorities, utilities, and other stakeholders to make sure everything is done by the book.
